Why "EGS"?

EGS is the name BMW uses for the transmission control unit - the module generally known as the TCU. The abbreviation comes from the German Elektronische Getriebesteuerung, meaning "electronic transmission control".

The name EGS Bridge comes from exactly what the device does: it bridges the original EGS to a different vehicle.

Will there be a virtual clutch and transbrake?

No. At least not any time soon.

EGS Bridge works with the factory controller inside the transmission. That controller runs firmware made for BMW, and stock BMWs with the 8HP never had such features.

Adding them would require deep changes to the transmission firmware and an enormous amount of work. We are not ruling it out in the future, but it is not planned at the moment.

Do you have to remove the controller from the transmission, modify it, or solder anything?

No. As long as the transmission comes from an F-series or G-series BMW and is a first- or second-generation unit, no. The controller flashes whatever the transmission needs by itself.

Do you have to tune?

With a factory integration using the original engine ECU that sends correct torque (e.g. a stock E46/M54/MS43) - no. In that case the configuration comes down to a few simple steps: selecting the correct body, transmission and differential ratio from the lists, entering the wheel circumference, unlocking the transmission and calibrating the speed. With a standalone ECU there is the additional need to set up the torque table sent to the transmission and to configure correct torque reduction during shifts. More on the Setup page.

Are there different transmission modes?

Yes, four standard modes are available: ECO Pro, Comfort, Sport, Sport+.

Are paddle shifters supported?

Yes. Paddles can be connected to the analog or digital inputs, for example.

Will the controller work with an M54 or M57 engine, an MS43 or EDC16 ECU, etc.?

With a factory integration the specific engine and its ECU barely matter. What matters is the body. Within the supported BMW E-series integration, the controller communicates the same way with every stock engine and its ECU across the bodies listed on the Supported integrations page.

Will the controller work with an M57 swapped into, say, a Nissan Patrol?

Yes. What matters most is which engine ECU was used for the swap.

If the engine runs on its factory BMW ECU, you can pick the BMW integration matching its generation. Keep in mind, though, that a car like that usually has no BMW ABS/DSC module, so the controller won't read wheel speed from it the way it does in a factory install.

In that case the speed source has to be set up separately. It can be speed derived from the driveshaft, a speed signal the target car provides over CAN or a digital input, or an extra sensor fitted specifically for it.

Where does the controller get the torque it sends to the transmission?

With a factory integration the torque comes straight from the factory engine ECU.

With a standalone ECU or an analog integration, you can configure a 16x16 torque table yourself. The controller then computes torque from engine RPM and load using a RPM × TPS or RPM × MAP table. There is also a table generator that creates an initial torque map as a starting point for further tuning.

What do I need to get this fully running, e.g. in a BMW E46?

Setting aside the mechanical side entirely (adapter, mount, driveshaft, etc.), you need:

  • a supported transmission
  • an EGS Bridge controller
  • an F-series or G-series BMW shifter
  • connectors for the transmission and the shifter
  • power wires and a CAN bus twisted pair
  • a K+DCAN diagnostic interface and one of the coding tools, e.g. NCS Dummy, to code the car if you're swapping from a manual transmission

Can I "stage" the transmission, flash my own maps?

Yes. The controller provides a built-in flasher and the stock maps as a basis for changes. You can modify the transmission software the same way as on any stock BMW the transmission came from.

Can I "stage" the transmission directly from EGS Bridge Manager?

Not yet, but it is one of the next things we are actively working on - the ability to load ready-made "stage" files and adjust parameters such as shift points.

What are the safety mechanisms? What happens if the controller fails?

The controller works with the stock TCU inside the transmission, so all the factory safety mechanisms designed by the manufacturer remain active. If the controller fails, the transmission enters its own internal limp mode and commands the P position. The physical design of the transmission - specifically the parking-lock mechanism - will not let it lock while the driveshaft is turning. The parking pawl only engages once the vehicle has actually stopped.

I plugged the controller into my computer over USB, but the software won't connect. Why?

The controller won't power up from USB alone. It needs a +12V supply connected to communicate with a computer.
